WHAT YOU VISIT
Etz Ahayim Synagogue
- Located in Ortakoy, near the European leg of the Bosphorus
Bridge. When the previous synagogue burned down in 1941 with
only the marble Aron-ha-Kodesh remaining, the new synagogue
was rebuilt on the location of the then midrash. |

Visits can be made with previous appointments and both
weekday and Shabbat services can be attended likewise. |
|
Bet Yaakov Synagogues -
This is the bigger of the two Synagogues of the Kuzguncuk
Jewish Community. It is also called Kehilla Santral (Central
Synagogue) or Kal de Abaso (Lower Synagogue) among the local
population. Although it was known to be built in 1878, later
researches found a firman (order) of the Ottoman Sultan
dated 1862, which was a permission given to Kuzguncuk Jewish
Community to repair their Synagogue. |

This new founding makes think that this historical
building can be even older than 1878. The Synagogue, which
has pictures of the biblical times on the ceiling has
services every Saturday and on every Jewish holiday as well
as the special ceremonies like Bar-Mitzvahs, Bat Mitzvahs,
Brith Milas, Vijolas, weddings and funerals. |

In the garden, there is also a Midrash, renovated by
Sabetay Mizrahi in the memory of his father Yaakov Mizrahi,
which is used for some occasions and holidays. In that
beautiful Synagogue with its large garden, Seuda Hall und
Suka place, which is very much liked by everyone, as a
tradition every year, the Sukot festival is organized by the
board members of the Kuzguncuk |

Jewish Community and the whole Jewish Community of
Istanbul gets invited to that occasion. The Synagogue is
also visited by many local and international tourists during
the year. |

Grand Bazaar - The
largest and the oldest covered market place in the world
with more than 4,000 shops in the labyrinth of streets.
Enjoy the colorful array of shops that offer an endless
selection of goods that includes jewelry, fabrics, spices
and local handicrafts. |

The Grand Bazaar is closed on
Sundays. |

Guests must be able to walk
approximately 1-1.5 miles over uneven and cobblestone
surfaces, inclines and 40 to 65 steps thus the guests must
be cautious to watch their step at all times in order to
avoid injuries. |

Comfortable clothing, flat walking shoes, sun hat, sun glasses and sun
screen are strongly recommended. |

Please expect dense traffic conditions in
Istanbul. |

The
order of the sites visited may change to avoid the crowds. |

Temperatures can reach extreme
highs during summer months; we recommend that you drink a
lot of water and use suitable sun protection. |

The Synagogue visits are subject
to the permission of the Synagogue Authorities. Respectful
attire is required to visit the venues. This excursion is
also subject to cancellation due to the religious festivals
in the synagogues. Advance booking should be made for this
tour due to special security clearance required by the
venues. We will ask copies of your passports to obtain
permission. |
