WHAT YOU VISIT
Taksim Square
- Taksim Square is the heart of
modern Istanbul, laid out in the late 1800s near a taksim
(branching-point) in the city's water distribution system.
You can still see the taksim at the beginning of Istiklal
Caddesi. The Independence Monument in the circle at the |
|
southern end of the square
commemorates the Turkish Republic's founder, Kemal Ataturk,
in both his roles, as military commander-in-chief and as
statesman. |
|
Istiklal Avenue - Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue) formerly the Grande Rue de Pera, is the heart of Beyoglu, the more modern district of Istanbul built during the 19th century.
The city's most popular strolling, shopping and snacking street, now reserved for pedestrians, is lined with boutiques, cafes, consulates, restaurants, galleries, cinemas and banks, with residential apartments above. |
|
|
|
When 19th-century travelers spoke of Constantinople
(Istanbul) as the Paris of the East, they were thinking of
the Grande Rue de Pera (Istiklal Caddesi) and its half-European, half-Asian culture.
The avenue begins at Taksim Square, the hub of modern Istanbul, you can walk all the way down or enjoy riding the Nostalgic Tram. |

French Street
- For a taste of France in Istanbul, head to Fransiz
(Cezayir) Sokagi, the city's decidedly French quarter.
Tucked away behind the famed Galatasaray Lycee (Galatasaray
School) off Istiklal Street is a cobbled tribute to the
French influence in Turkey, which has lasted for centuries.
Though opened in 2004, the Street exudes a historic grace
thanks to a carefully planned restoration |
|
project led by Parisian
architects. The project took two years and involved the
restoration of buildings and pavements. Street heaters and a
special sound system were installed and |
|
century-old coal-gas lamps were
imported from France, all contributing to the unique
atmosphere of the quarter. The beautifully restored terraced
buildings house a number of quaint boutiques and galleries
as well as patisseries, wine houses, cafes and restaurants
specialising in French cuisine and wines. For a top
experience, try a restaurant with a roof terrace to get a
unique perspective on the city. |

Antique Shops
- Stroll the Istiklal Avenue through Nevizade, a street
addresses all kinds of tastes in terms of shopping. Its
second-hand booksellers and antique shops in Cukurcuma and
Tunel invite you to the tastes of the past. |
|
Nevizade
- Nevizade, off Cicek Pasaji and Galatasaray Square in
Istanbul's Beyoglu district, is chock full of meyhanes
(Turkish tavernas) serving good food and copious booze at
outdoor tables in a bright, active atmosphere. It's great
fun with a Turkish friend, though a bit daunting without.
It's really a friendly scene, and the waiters will do their
best to include you. |
|
|
|
After a few minutes you're certain to have made some new
friends among the Turkish and foreign diners. Your Nevizade
Sokak dining experience may be the most memorable of your
entire Turkish trip. |
