WHAT YOU VISIT
Ephesus - Of all the cities mentioned in the New Testament that were visited by St. Paul, Ephesus is the only one that was also addressed in the Book of Revelation. According to Acts, St. Paul visited the city of Ephesus on both his second and third missionary |
journeys. On his second journey his visit was brief. After engaging in a discussion in the synagogue, St. Paul left Ephesus, leaving Priscilla and Aquila in the city, and promised to return (Acts 18:18-20). Paul returned to Ephesus during his third journey. |
This time he spent a considerable length of time in Ephesus. (Acts 19:8-10 says Paul spent two years teaching and preaching in the hall of Tyrannus in Ephesus, after having spent three months teaching in the synagogue there. Acts 20:31 says he spent three years in Ephesus.) |

The Church of Virgin Mary - To the north of the Harbor Baths is the Church of Mary (The Council Church). The main entrance faces the Ephesus-Selcuk road. The church was built dedicated to Mary and is an important structure in the history of Christianity. It was also the site of a Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. |
The Basilica of St. John - Early tradition associated John, the disciple of Jesus, the author of the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation with the city of Ephesus. As early as the 4th or 5th century a Christian church was built over a simple grave, supposedly the grave of St. John. In the 6th century Emperor Justinian had an impressive domed basilica built to replace the earlier |

church. The church, known as the Church of St. John the Theologian, is located on Ayasuluk Hill, which can be reached by a street leading up from the center of the town called Selcuk. |
The House of Virgin Mary - In the 19th century a German nun, Catherine Emmerich, claimed that the location of the house of Mary, the mother of Jesus, was revealed to her in a dream at a location near Ephesus. Based on the details described by the nun, Lazarist fathers from Izmir explored the area and found the house she described several miles south of Selcuk at Panaya |
Kapulu. The Vatican has recognized this small house in the Solmissos Mountains as the final resting place of the Virgin Mary. A small shrine dedicated to St. Mary was found when the ruins of the house were first discovered. |
