WHAT YOU VISIT
Ancient Corinth
- Corinth, Greece's wealthiest city, once boasted a forum larger than
Rome. Famed also for its wicked ways, the city was introduced to Christianity by
St. Paul. You will see the remains of the paved, 25-foot-wide Lechaion Road and Doric Temple of Apollo. |
Corinth Museum
- The museum houses an impressive collection of antiquities unearthed from the ruins. Most of the antiquities, including superb mosaics, are Roman in
origin. The original Greek city-state was destroyed by Rome in 154 B.C. and was
rebuilt as a Roman colony. |
Acropolis
- The Acropolis
dominates the Athenian landscape. Your guided walking tour begins with a walk up steep steps through the Propylaea, which extends
150-feet across the western face of the Acropolis
. Adjacent to the entrance stands the Temple of Athena Nike
(or Wingless Victory). Beyond the Propylaea, on the highest point of the Acropolis
, stands the Parthenon,
which was dedicated to the Virgin Athena, the white pentelic marble temple was built 447 - 437
B.C. Beyond the Parthenon, lies the Erechteion, a temple honoring Athena
and the sea god Poseidon. The graceful Porch of the Caryatids features columns of lovely maids supporting the roof of the temple. |
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Corinth Canal
- Like a deep gash in massive rock, the canal, 76-feet wide and 26-feet deep, divides the narrow causeway linking the Peloponese with the mainland. Engineers of
the 19th century succeeded where others had failed. |
The Emperor Nero once ordered a canal to be built here but was forced to abandon the project. View the canal from a bridge spanning its banks - 200-feet above the water. |
